Built about 500 years ago by Raja Dhanyamanikya, Matabari Temple, it is one of the fifty one Maha Pithasthans of India. The temple has a legend of it's own,it is believed that Maharaja Dhanyamanikya wanted to build this temple for the idol Vishnu. But one night he had a dream about anidol of Maa Kali and he later brought it from Chattagram. Some people said that the King of Tripura found two idols near to Chandranath Pith. One was of Maa Kali and another one was a Shibling. Maharaja then decided to place them in Udaipur. Butnobody could move that shiba-linga from that place. So Maharaja took the idol of Maa Kali. But there were some conditions for the placement of this idol. Maharaja placed that idol of Maa Kali by completing all conditions.
The temple doors are opened from 4am till 10pm where the purohits (priests) perform puja and dry sweet or perah is offered to the Mother Goddess. The pilgrims may offer puja with the locally made 'Perah' .They may also offer food (rice, curries etc.) prepared by the temple management to the deity. They can get "PRASAD" against coupon @ Rs.15/- being issued by the Manager on payment.
Very close to the temple, there is a big tank commonly called "KALYAN SAGAR" which was excavated by Maharaja Kalyan Manikya. Various types of big fish and tortoise live in this tank. The pilgrims can easily feed these creatures. Though the temple is always full with hundreds of devotees but the Diwali Puja is the main annual festival when lakhs of pilgrims assemble here from all over the State and outside as well.
The temple is 3km from Udaipur and is well linked by NH 44 which connects Agartala with many north eastern state. It is connected by regular bus services with all sub-divisional towns of Tripura. Besides, bus service is also available from Silchar, Guwahati, Karimganj and Shillong. The temple being very close to the state, creates an easy access to accommodation for the tourists coming to visit the Tripura Sundari Temple.Though not of very high class, you may find hotels, which may be convenient and comfortable for you.
