If you are an ardent devotee of the supreme Goddess Durga or Mahamaya, this ancient temple is a must visit on a pilgrimage to Assam.  The temple acquires its name from the goddess Mahamaya, which means supreme illusion. The Mahamaya temple, better known as Mahamaya Dham of Bagribari, is a very sacred place of Hindu worship. This ancient Hindu temple is famous for its religious significance and has a rich cultural and historical heritage. It is one of the greatest Shakti Peethas and attracts a lot of pilgrims and tourists every year.
 
It is a popular belief that the Goddess Mahamaya in ancient times; was worshipped only by the Zamindar or landlord and the local people of Parvatjowar. The sovereign Goddess was the primary deity of the Zamindar of Parvatjowar. Eventually, this temple received huge recognition and mother Mahamaya was worshipped by one and all in Assam.
 
This beautiful temple is considered to be one of the most important shrines in North East India and every year in January, a Shakti Yaga is performed at this temple. This templeis famous for its 400-year old tradition of animal sacrifice, especially during the time of Durga Puja. There is a magnificent idol of Goddess Kali and Lord Hanuman on the temple premises. There is also another temple near this place of worship, known as the Mahamaya Snaanghat Temple; which is believed to have been the baths of Goddess Mahamaya in ancient times.
 
This holy shrine is located in the Kokrajhar District of Assam. It is 30 kms. from the town of Dhubri and 10 kms. from the town of Bilasipara. It is very well connected by road and rail from Guwahati. It is on the National Highway 31 and there are a lot of buses and taxi services available from the city. The nearest railway station is the Dhubri Railway Station and you can choose to stay in a decent accommodation in Dhubri at a very reasonable price.
