Manipur is an abode of enchanting flora and fauna providing no less joy to the tourists from the country and abroad. A visit to the princely north eastern state would leave the tourists in a state of joy and excitement only because of its colourful flora and fauna. The best spot to catch the glimpse is the Manipur Zoological Garden. Situated beside the Imphal-Kanchup Road in the southern part of Manipur Agriculture University, it is a venture to preserve and protect the endangered species of flora and fauna. A beauty of the green patch of paddy field in the western side of the garden has made it more serene. It is called the jewel box of Manipur considering the presence of the endangered species of birds and animals at Lamphelpat 8 at a distance of 8 km from Imphal.
The focus falls on the Thiamin deer apart from other 55 different species of birds and around 420 animals. Of these, 14 species are endangered in the zoo which covers an area of 8 hectares with an additional 2.13 hectares at Langol Reserve Forest. The area is reserved for captive breeding of Sangai, which is considered to be one of the most endangered animals in the state. The zoo open is all on all days except Monday.
The nearest airport to reach the zoo is the Imphal Airport which is well connected with all major states. Imphal is the nearest railway station for the tourists who travel by train. Some of the tourists reach the spot via Dimapur railway station. Most of the tourists visit the state from April to September.
