Situated on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra in the Dhubri district of Assam, Gurudwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib was constructed in memory of the first visit of Sikh Guru Nanak Dev (founder of Sikkhism) to Dhubri. Upon his arrival in Assam in 1505 AD, Guru Nanak stayed with Srimanta Shankardev, a renowned Saint and reformer.
In the 17th century, the ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur visited this place and installed this Gurudwara in Dhubri. To honour the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, thousands of devotees of all faiths from all over the country and world would unite together in this historic holy place, every year during December. The festival commences on 3rd of December every year with great earnestness. This festival is called Sahidee-Guru-Parav by the Sikhs.
Guru Tegh Bahadur had visited Dhubri with Raja Ram Singh, Mughal General of Amber. A war was taking place between the Mughals and the Ahoms during that time. Fearing for their son, parents of Raja Ram Singh who were ardent followers of the Guru, requested him to accompany their son in his mission. But however Guru Tegh Bahadur’s role proved to be much more significant than his mere presence. He worked towards bringing peace between Raja Ram Singh and the Ahom king. He requested the rulers to accomplish their terms through peaceful negotiations rather than through blood shed. A 26-foot-long stone which was aimed at the Guru whilst fighting, fell with such impact that half of the stone was planted in the ground. This stone can still be seen in the same position.
The white simple architecture of the Gurudwara, decorated with a gateway, presents an alluring picture. The staircase lead to the open courtyard from where one can enter the shrine of Darbar Sahib. In a corner of the courtyard, there is a gallery overlooking the shrine where the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikh is preserved.
