Kiphire is the head quarter of the Kiphire district – the eleventh district of Nagaland carved out of the state’s Tuensang district. Situated at an elevation of 896 m above sea level Kiphire is bounded by Tuensang District in the north, Phek District in the south, Zunheboto in the west and Myanmar in the east.  The predominant tribes here include the Sangtam (Eastern), Yimchunger and Sema.

About 254 km from the state capital Kohima, Kiphire’s main attraction is the Saramati peak which is the highest peak in Nagaland with an altitude of 3,841m. While Seyochung, Sitimi and Pungro are major towns, places of tourist interest also include the Kisatong village, Salomi Village, Mimi Village, Sukhyap or Lover’s Paradise.

The Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, close to the Myanmar border, receives high rainfall and is known for its scenic beauty and wildlife variety.The forest hosts cat species including tigers and Hoolock gibbons, the only ape found in India. The Fakhim Sanctuary is also a bird watcher’s favorite with sightings of beautiful and rare pheasants. And other winged species.

How to reach

The National Highway 155 connects Kiphire to Kohima, Meluri, Dimapur, and Mokochung. The State Transport buses and private taxis are available for Kiphire from all major destinations in the state. Those travelling by train to Nagaland disembark at Dimapur which is the only railway station in the state. From Dimapur to Kiphire, regular buses and private tourist vehicles are available. Tourists can also take a flight to Dimapur first and then travel by road to Kiphire.

Foreign Tourists must obtain Protected Area Permit (PAP). They are allowed to visit the eleven district headquarters and specified place for a period of thirty days. Married couples and a group of four (4) persons or more permit can be issued from Resident Commissioner office, Nagaland House, Delhi, Home Commissioner and Commissioner Secretary to Tourism, Govt. of Nagaland. But for individual/two persons or three persons have to obtain PAP from Ministry Of Home Affairs.

However, Nationals of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China and Myanmer have to get prior approval from Ministry of Home Affair, Govt. of India.
