Dzükou derives its meaning from the Angami/Mao word that translates to "Cold Water" referring to the ice cold stream that flows through the valley. Mao is actually a border town of Manipur with Nagaland. Mao Gate is popularly known at Mao, the last town of Manipur before reaching the thresholds of Nagaland's border. In Mao the word Dzükou relates to a dream because of its mystic charm and beauty. Mao legend said that when the beloveds reach the Dzükou valley, the night also turns like day and moonlit shines with the same intensity as that of the sun.
Surrounded by emerald green hills, lost in the murmur of streams flowing by and enchanted by lush forests Dzükou Valley is an ultimate retreat. Situated at the border of Nagaland and Manipur at an altitude of 2438 meters above sea level behind the Japfü Peak, the valley looks like a mown lawn from a distance watered by two meandering streams, Dzükou and Japfü which crisscross the valley a running through an elaborately developed garden.
The picturesque valley and its vast meadows popularly known as the “Valley of Flowers of the North East” are a treat for any nature lover.
Interestingly, for adventure enthusiasts from all over the globe, a new five hour trek route was opened by the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association. This valley is well known for its natural beauty, seasonal flowers and the flora and fauna abound.
The rare Dzükou Lily is found only in Dzükou Valley. The valley can also be alternatively accessed through Viswema village about 25 kilometers through a motorable road from Kohima trailing up by the rear of Peak Japfu in Nagaland while it takes only five hours from Mt. Isii in Manipur's Senapati district.
