Kiphire is the head quarter of the Kiphire district – the eleventh district of Nagaland carved out of the state’s Tuensang district. Situated at an elevation of 896 m above sea level Kiphire is bounded by Tuensang District in the north, Phek District in the south, Zunheboto in the west and Myanmar in the east. The predominant tribes here include the Sangtam (Eastern), Yimchunger and Sema.
About 254 km from the state capital Kohima, Kiphire’s main attraction is the Saramati peak which is the highest peak in Nagaland with an altitude of 3,841m. While Seyochung, Sitimi and Pungro are major towns, places of tourist interest also include the Kisatong village, Salomi Village, Mimi Village, Sukhyap or Lover’s Paradise.
The Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, close to the Myanmar border, receives high rainfall and is known for its scenic beauty and wildlife variety.The forest hosts cat species including tigers and Hoolock gibbons, the only ape found in India.
