Jagannath Temple was built by the Manikyas, Maharaja Govinda Manikya and his younger brother Jagannath Deva jointly in 1661 A. D.They chose Agartala above Udaipur as the capital for decorating the capital.The Jagannath Temple was built as an effort for adorning the state with numerous monuments and beautiful sites.It is said that, Daityanaryana, the General-in Chief of Maharaja Bijaya Manikya (1529-1560 A. D.) had brought the idol of Lord Jagannath from Puri and installed it in this temple. This was afterwards removed from this temple and installed at Comilla.
One of the biggest Vishnu Temple, it stands as a ruin heritage site at the south-west corner of Jagannath Dighi adjacent to KBI. Rathajatra was the biggest festival in Udaypur starting from Jagannath bari to Mahadev Bari Though inclined to Islamic architecture, the Jagannath Temple represents a confluence of Hemadpanthi and Arabic style on the exterior with the top crowned with a dome and a vaulted roof. It depictsthe Hindu flair on the insides.
Though particularly a Vishnu temple but both Savaits and non-Savaits pay aregular visit to the temple.This temple is dedicated to the Hindu Godslike Balabhadra and Subhadra. The temple adorned with bright orange stepped up Shikharas attracts devoteestemple all year round from all over the nation.
Located in the interiors of Agartala this great specimen can be accessed through local buses or hired or private vehicles. Accomodation may not be easily found but you can stay in Agatala and then pay homage to the temple. The ancient look and architecture of the temple and its surroundings wilfreshen up your hearts.
