Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to a variety of endangered and extinct species of animals and birds. It is most famous for its resident Golden Langurs. This beautiful sanctuary is the second protected habitat in India for the Golden Langur. Two exquisite lakes surround the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, namely the Diplai Lake and the Dheer Lake. These two lakes serve as hotspots for bio diversity and play a very crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem of the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary. This beautiful rocky terrain is a perfect spot for trekking, wildlife photography and bird watching.
 
In 1966, the Chakrashila Hill was declared as a reserve and on July 14 1994, this hill and the area around it was declared as a sanctuary by the Assam Government. Nature’s Beckon, a local environmental activist group played a very important part in the recognition of this sanctuary.
 
This sanctuary preserves and protects many endangered species of birds and animals. There are more than 250 species of birds like the open billed stork, little egret, pond heron, hornbill, darter, drongo etc. 30 species of mammals have been found in this reserve which includes the Bengal fox, leopard cat, Chinese pangolin, Indian pipistrelle, Asiatic jackal, flying fox, short-tailed mole and rhesus macaque. More than 60 species of insects and over 40 species of butterflies are found in this forest. This sanctuary is also home to 23 species of reptiles and amphibians that includes turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs etc.
 
The Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary falls under the Dhubri and Kokrajhar Districts of Assam. It is approximately 70 kms from Dhubri and 7kms from the town of Kokrajhar, 50 kms from Bongaigaon and 269 kms from Guwahati. The nearest airport is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport and the nearest railway station is the Kokrajhar Station. Buses and taxis are also available.
