Nameri National Park

40 kms from Tezpur, Assam

A perfect getaway for nature lovers and bird watchers is the Nameri National Park, characterised by the hills of deciduous forests and the River Jia Bhoroli running through it. It is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur district of Assam. Known for its importance as a home to the rare and endangered White Winged Wood Duck and more than 300 species of birds, it is also famous for angling for the Golden Mahseer, a treasured catch for any angler. The Park has been recognised as Nameri Tiger Reserve.

Hiring experienced boatmen from the neighbouring villages, travellers can enjoy the thrilling experience of level one river rafting in the Jia Bhoroli river, and yes if lucky enough you might get to spot some wildlife from the rubber boats along with the sighting of birds. A home for different bird species, it opens doors for bird lovers to go bird watching around the Park. A 5km jungle walk, guided by an armed forest official, in the core area of the National Park, also provides an enchanting experience as one can, if fortunate, sight elephants or tigers.

By exploring the villages, the visitors will get a glimpse of the lifestyle and culture of the Mising (tribe) people. They can also get a taste of local ethnic cuisine in the homes of these simple village folk, thereby getting a feel of their warmth and hospitality.

Highly recommended is a stay at Eco-Camp, in the periphery of the Park, run by the Assam Bhoroli Angling and Conservation Association (ABACA). Bookings should be made beforehand. A walk down the river bank which is 1.5 kms from the camp can be an adorable experience.

Nameri National Park would be a much-sought after destination for nature and adventure lovers to seek and experience the wilderness.
